The Fundamental Unit of Life, clearly explained

The Fundamental Unit of Life explains why the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of living organisms. It compares prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisation, plant and animal cells, and the jobs performed by the plasma membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, and cell organelles.

Plasma membrane and transport

The plasma membrane is selectively permeable. Diffusion moves particles from higher to lower concentration, while osmosis is movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane from higher water concentration to lower water concentration.

Nucleus and genetic control

The nucleus is enclosed by a nuclear membrane and contains chromosomes made of DNA and protein. Genes on DNA carry information for traits and cell functions.

Endomembrane system

Endoplasmic reticulum helps make and transport proteins or lipids; the Golgi apparatus modifies, packages, and dispatches materials; lysosomes contain digestive enzymes for breakdown.

Energy and storage organelles

Mitochondria release usable energy as ATP through respiration. Plastids occur in plant cells: chloroplasts perform photosynthesis, while other plastids can store starch, oils, or proteins. Vacuoles store materials and help maintain turgidity in plants.
