Understanding Quadrilaterals, clearly explained

Understanding Quadrilaterals connects angle properties with the classification of polygons, quadrilaterals, and parallelograms. Students should be able to move both ways: use properties to identify a shape and use the named shape to infer its properties.

The most reliable approach is to mark equal sides, parallel sides, diagonals, and known angles on a diagram before calculating. A figure that looks like a rectangle or rhombus is not proof of its properties.

Angle sum of a polygon

The sum of interior angles of an n-sided polygon is (n − 2) × 180°. A quadrilateral therefore has angle sum 360°. The sum of one exterior angle at each vertex of any polygon is 360°.

Parallelogram

Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and equal, opposite angles are equal, adjacent angles are supplementary, and the diagonals bisect each other.

Rectangle, rhombus, and square

A rectangle is a parallelogram with four right angles and equal diagonals. A rhombus has four equal sides and perpendicular diagonals. A square has all of these properties: equal sides, right angles, equal diagonals, and perpendicular diagonals.

Kite and trapezium

A kite has two pairs of adjacent equal sides; one diagonal bisects the other at right angles. A trapezium has at least one pair of parallel sides, while an isosceles trapezium has equal non-parallel sides and equal base angles.

Answer

A decagon has n = 10 sides. Sum = (n − 2) × 180° = 8 × 180° = 1440°.

Q2Three angles of a quadrilateral are 75°, 90°, and 110°. Find the fourth angle.

Answer

The four angles total 360°. Fourth angle = 360° − (75° + 90° + 110°) = 85°.

Q3A parallelogram has one angle of 68°. Find the other three angles.

Answer

The opposite angle is also 68°. Each adjacent angle is 180° − 68° = 112°. The four angles are 68°, 112°, 68°, and 112°.

Q4Is every square a rectangle? Is every rectangle a square?

Answer

Every square is a rectangle because it has four right angles and opposite sides parallel. Not every rectangle is a square because a rectangle need not have all four sides equal.
