Changes Around Us, clearly explained

Changes Around Us helps students describe everyday changes using evidence: whether a change can be reversed, whether heating or cooling is involved, and whether a new shape, state, or material appears.

A change should not be classified from one memorised keyword. Melting wax and burning wax both involve heat, but one can be reversed by cooling while the other forms new substances and cannot be reversed easily.

Reversible change

A reversible change can be undone to recover the original material or condition, such as melting and freezing ice, inflating and deflating a balloon, or folding and unfolding paper.

Irreversible change

An irreversible change cannot be readily undone to recover the original material, such as cooking food, burning paper, or setting curd from milk.

Heating and cooling

Heating can cause expansion, melting, evaporation, or chemical change. Cooling can cause contraction, condensation, or freezing. The result depends on the material and temperature.

Expansion in useful situations

A metal rim can be heated so it expands and fits over a wooden wheel; on cooling it contracts and grips tightly. Gaps are left in some structures so materials can expand safely.

Yes. Ice melts into water on heating, and the water can be cooled to form ice again, recovering the original state.

Answer

Heating makes the metal expand, so the rim fits over the wheel. It contracts on cooling and holds the wheel tightly.

Answer

Cooling water below its freezing point changes it to ice. Heating water to its boiling point changes it to water vapour.
