Animal Kingdom, clearly explained

Animal Kingdom classifies animals using a small set of structural criteria: level of organisation, symmetry, germ layers, body cavity, segmentation, and the presence or absence of a notochord. Learning these criteria first makes the phyla easier to compare.

Board and entrance questions often give a feature or example and ask for the correct group. A comparison table is more useful than memorising each phylum as an isolated paragraph.

Organisation, symmetry, and germ layers

Animals may show cellular, tissue, organ, or organ-system organisation. Symmetry may be absent, radial, or bilateral. Diploblastic animals form two germ layers; triploblastic animals form three.

Coelom and segmentation

A true coelom is a body cavity lined by mesoderm. Animals may be acoelomate, pseudocoelomate, or coelomate. Metameric segmentation means the body is divided into repeated units, as in annelids.

Non-chordates

Major non-chordate groups include Porifera, Cnidaria, Ctenophora, Platyhelminthes, Aschelminthes, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Echinodermata, and Hemichordata, each distinguished by diagnostic features.

Chordates

Chordates possess a notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, paired pharyngeal gill slits, and a post-anal tail at least during some stage. Vertebrates replace or surround the notochord with a vertebral column.
